Deutsche Woche in Bar Harbor

The Maine Chapter of the AATG invites you to attend the twenty-sixth annual Deutsche Woche in Bar Harbor, Maine, from August 8-14, 2010, on the beautiful ocean-shore campus of the College of the Atlantic.

This total immersion program for middle, secondary, and college teachers of German offers lectures and hands-on workshops designed to help you acquire new ideas for teaching and to refresh your German speaking skills while networking with teaching colleagues from all over the country.

We especially encourage new teachers or those who have few opportunities to travel abroad to take advantage of this immersion opportunity.

This year's topic, Creating Classroom Teaching Activities and Materials, will enable you to work in teams of your own choosing to create teaching materials that you simply do not have the time or resources to create during the school year. We expect a wonderful exchange of original ideas and talents from all attendees. You are encouraged to bring samples of materials you currently use or have created to share with your colleagues. In addition, the teams will work to create new and unique learning materials that all members will then be able to take with them to use in their own classes.

Accommodations

The Deutsche Woche in Bar Harbor provides a wonderful opportunity to be immersed in German language and culture while enjoying the natural beauty of one of New England's most picturesque seaside locations adjacent to Acadia National Park. Accommodations and classrooms are in the recently renovated Seafox, a former summer cottage right on the water's edge. Classrooms have a beautiful ocean view and are equipped with wireless internet service. Meals are provided by the staff of the College of the Atlantic, using mostly organic fresh fruits and vegetables from their own gardens. Vegetarian options are always available.

Costs

A week in coastal Maine including room and board is only $700, the most affordable immersion opportunity available. Most rooms are double occupancy, with a few single rooms available. Internet access for the week is an additional $10. Participants are expected to stay for the full week and to speak German during the duration of the program.

The Deutsche Woche in Bar Harbor is supported in part by the AATG and the Goethe Institute Boston. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance and can receive 4.5 CEU credits from the University of Maine for an additional $10 fee.
